Are You A Slave?
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1
Jesus died for our sins and has set us free from the bondage of sin, but oftentimes we don’t feel free because of the unnecessary standards that we have made for ourselves. Somewhere along the way, we believed the lie that a worthy life is a busy life. We tell ourselves that if we don’t check off everything on our to-do list, get to the next level in our careers, or maintain a clean house, then we have failed.
In addition to creating demanding standards for ourselves, we torture ourselves with fear, bitterness, envy, and other negative emotions. In essence, we put ourselves in chains and become our own slave drivers.
Jesus invites us to find rest with him.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Matthew 11:28-30
If Jesus is the lord of your life, he has set you free. Do not be a slave to anyone or anything. Do not be a slave to yourself. As we continue to learn from Jesus, he will give us rest. And when we abide in the truth in God’s word, we will find true freedom.
